What is the best way to experience Teotihuacán at dawn without doing a hot air balloon?
Arrive at Gate 1 exactly at 08:00 when the archaeological zone opens. The morning air at 2,300m is crisp, and the tour buses from Mexico City do not arrive until 10:30. Walk the Avenue of the Dead in near-total silence. You will have the Temple of Quetzalcoatl and the massive Pyramid of the Sun largely to yourself before the midday heat and vendors set in. It is a completely different, spiritual experience compared to the midday rush.
What locals actually do
Chilangos showing off the ruins to visiting friends prefer to bypass the midday heat entirely. They hire a private driver or take the early Autobuses del Norte bus around 06:30 to reach San Juan Teotihuacán early. After walking the site for two hours, they bypass the giant buffet restaurants nearby and head straight to La Gruta for an early lunch inside a volcanic cave, or find local barbacoa in the neighboring town. By 13:00, when the sun is punishing and the souvenir stalls are loud, they are already heading back to CDMX for a late afternoon mezcal.
Book a private driver for 06:30, enter through Gate 1 at 08:00, walk north to the Pyramid of the Moon, then have lunch at La Gruta.
Practical notes
- 01Take the Autobuses Teotihuacán line from Terminal del Norte; buses depart every 15 minutes starting early in the morning.
- 02Bring a warm jacket for the chilly morning hours and high-SPF sunscreen, as there is absolutely no shade on the ancient avenue.
- 03Pack plenty of water and some pocket cash, as card readers at the ticket booths can be offline or slow.
Good to know
- ✗Climbing the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon is no longer permitted to protect the structures.
- ✗The site is closed on Mondays, so plan your excursion for any other day of the week.
- ✗La Gruta restaurant requires reservations days in advance, especially for weekend lunch slots.
