Sunday morning is the best time to catch the 8:00 bus from Terminal del Sur in Tasqueña for the 75-minute ride to Tepoztlán. Afterward, making the steep hike up to the Tepozteco pyramid before the midday heat hits is the ultimate reward.
What locals actually do
Chilangos treat Tepoztlán as a weekend escape, but the trick is beating the heavy Sunday evening traffic returning to CDMX. Locals arrive early, hike the Tepozteco while the air is still cool, and then spend the afternoon sampling pre-Hispanic food at the municipal market. We don't drive because parking in the narrow cobblestone streets is difficult, opting instead for the Pullman de Morelos bus which costs about 170 MXN each way. If we stay late, it’s for a michelada on a rooftop terrace, but we always queue for the return bus by 17:00 to escape the worst highway bottlenecks.
