What is Mexico City like during Semana Santa?
Late March or early April brings Semana Santa, and with it, the absolute quietest week of the year in Mexico City. Virtually the entire local population decamps to the coast, leaving the usually crowded streets of Roma, Condesa, and Centro completely empty. Traffic disappears, pollution drops, and booking a table at normally impossible spots like Contramar or Rosetta becomes surprisingly effortless. It is the golden week for wandering without the usual metropolitan rush.
What locals actually do
Chilangos who stay behind cherish this week above all others. While visitors often worry that the city shuts down, the reality is that museums, restaurants, and bars remain open, just operating at a highly relaxed pace. Locals spend these days walking down the middle of empty avenues like Paseo de la Reforma, riding the Ecobici without fighting buses, and dropping into neighborhood cantinas that are usually packed to the gills. It is a highly specific, peaceful version of the city. The only places that actually close are smaller, family-run fondas and specialized workshops, especially on Good Thursday and Good Friday, but the main dining scene runs at full steam.
Walk down Paseo de la Reforma on Good Friday morning when it is eerily silent, then secure a walk-in lunch table at Contramar without a reservation.
