What locals actually do
Chilangos love Coyoacán during Día de Muertos, but we time our visits carefully. November 1st and 2nd after dark get incredibly crowded, so we prefer visiting on October 30th or 31st, or heading out in the early afternoon. We bypass the commercial stands in favor of traditional neighborhood bakeries like Panadería La Victoria for fresh pan de muerto. After viewing the municipal altars in the main plaza, we walk south to the quieter, residential streets of Barrio de Santa Catarina. Here, neighbors display smaller, incredibly personal altars in their doorways, offering an intimate glimpse of the tradition away from the heavy street traffic.
