What is the best way to spend an afternoon exploring the mid-century streets and tacos of Narvarte?
Narvarte Oriente is best explored on foot just before dusk, when the neighborhood's mid-century apartment buildings catch the low light. Start walking along Calle Luz Saviñón, looking for the characteristic stone mosaics and curved balconies of the 1950s. Stop at Almanegra Café for a cold brew, then head toward Avenida Universidad. As night falls, the neighborhood's famous taco stands light up. Grab pastor tacos at El Vilsito, a mechanics' shop that transforms into a legendary taquería after 20:00.
What locals actually do
Chilangos know Narvarte as the low-key heart of taco culture in the south-central part of the city. While Roma and Condesa draw the international crowds for natural wine, Narvarte remains deeply residential, flat, and highly walkable. Locals plan their visits around late-afternoon strolls to admire the functionalist architecture, followed by a serious taco crawl. Beyond El Vilsito, we head to Tacos Manolo for their signature chopped beef cooked on a plancha with bacon and onions, or to El California for classic charro beans. It is a neighborhood where families sit on benches under jacaranda trees and neighbors actually know one another by name.
