What makes Círculo Mexicano the best design-forward stay in Centro Histórico?
Behind the Metropolitan Cathedral, Círculo Mexicano strips away Centro's chaotic noise with minimalist, Shaker-inspired design by Ambrosi Etchegaray. Housed in a 19th-century residential building, the 25 rooms feature white-washed brick, light wood, and skylights rather than standard windows. It is a striking contrast to the heavy baroque stone outside. Rates run about 5,200 MXN. The rooftop pool offers an eye-level view of the cathedral’s rear towers, making it the perfect sanctuary after a long day of navigating the historic streets below.
What locals actually do
Chilangos rarely stay overnight in Centro, but we come to Círculo Mexicano for the quiet rooftop patio and the ground-floor design shops. The patio is a favorite midday escape for a cold craft beer or a carajillo when the streets around the Zócalo get too intense. Right downstairs, you have access to some of the country's best independent Mexican fashion and design brands, plus a branch of the excellent bakery, Panadería Rosetta. Rather than fighting Centro's heavy evening traffic, we prefer to have a late afternoon drink here, watch the sun hit the cathedral stone, and then walk over to Cantina El Gallo de Oro for classic cantina snacks.
Book a top-floor room with a private patio, grab a morning guava roll from the ground-floor Panadería Rosetta, and eat it by the rooftop pool before the midday heat sets in.
