What is the best way to experience Teotihuacán at sunrise?
At 05:00, while the city is still asleep, is when you want to head northeast toward the valley. Booking a sunrise hot air balloon flight over the archaeological zone offers an unmatched perspective of the Sun and Moon pyramids before the gates even open. Most operators depart from Globopuerto Volare. Afterward, skip the buffet packages and head straight to La Gruta, a restaurant set inside a volcanic cave, for a traditional breakfast of escamoles and café de olla.
What locals actually do
Chilangos rarely visit the pyramids at midday because the valley heat and crowds are intense. Instead, we make it an early morning run, arriving by 07:30 to catch the light hitting the structures at a low angle. If we aren't flying, we enter through Gate 1 right at 08:00 to walk the Avenue of the Dead in relative solitude. By noon, when the tour buses from Centro Histórico start arriving in droves, we are already heading back toward CDMX or settling in for a long, shaded lunch of barbacoa and pulque in the nearby town of San Martín de las Pirámides.
Book a shared dawn flight with Volare, then walk the archaeological site at 08:00, followed by handmade quesadillas at the local stands outside Gate 3.
Practical notes
